Live updates, Trey Lance injured, Jimmy G. in

In the San Francisco 49ers’ home opener, Trey Lance was supposed to show he’s a worthy starting quarterback for a team with Super Bowl aspirations, but after a swirl of scrutiny amid the possibility of rain, the second-year QB was knocked out of action for the rest of the day on the team’s second possession, injuring his ankle on a running play.

Seahawks score on 49ers’ special teams snafu

Just when it looked like the 49ers were going to expand their lead on another Robbie Gould field-goal attempt, the Seahawks got their edge rusher in for a block that Michael Jackson returned 84 yards for a touchdown to narrow San Francisco’s lead to 20-7.

Halftime analysis

Michael Silver: The Hedge was worth it. When the 49ers shocked the football world by bringing back Jimmy Garoppolo as Trey Lance’s backup, they were willing to deal with the increase in drama in exchange for having a proven, familiar alternative should the 22-year-old quarterback struggle or get hurt.

With 2:20 left in the first quarter of his second game as the team’s No. 1 QB, Lance got hurt. He ran inside, took a hard hit from Seahawks linebacker Cody Barton, tried to get up and then went right back down. He left with an air cast on his right leg and a suspected fibula injury that could end his season.

Even if the news is better than expected, Jimmy G. is back for the foreseeable future. He’s 35-16 as the Niners’ starter and his presence is polarizing. Get used to it. Right now he and the Niners lead 20-0 and should be 1-1 by tonight.

Scott Ostler: Let’s hope this does NOT happen in the second half, but if Jimmy Garoppolo gets the wind knocked out and has to sit a series, the 49ers will go from having a quarterback (Trey Lance) playing fullback to having a fullback (Kyle Juszczyk, the emergency quarterback) playing quarterback. A lot of postgame chatter, by experts and others, will be second-guessing head coach Kyle Shanahan, and in this case it’s hard to secondguess the secondguessers.

49ers romp to 20-0 lead at half

Shortly after the Seahawks muffed receiving a punt deep in their own territory — recovered by Ross Dwelley — Kyle Juszczyk punched in the 49ers’ second touchdown of the first half to bring the score to 20-0 before halftime.

Jimmy G. throws 49ers’ first passing TD of 2022

Backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo hit backup tight end Ross Dwelley for a 38-yard touchdown in his first complete possession; 49ers lead expanded to 13-0.

Trey Lance knocked out of action

Trey Lance had to be taken off the field after injuring his right ankle on a running play immediately after Deebo Samuel’s 51-yard rumble brought them into field-goal range again in their second drive. Jimmy Garoppolo came in as Lance was carted to the locker room and ruled out for the remainder of the game. Garoppolo had to settle for a field goal on that possession to expand the 49ers’ lead to 6-0.

Eric Branch has more on Lance’s game-ending injury.

49ers score on opening drive

49ers 3, Seahawks 0. With his first possession, Trey Lance took the 49ers 73 yards down the field on 10 plays, had to settle for a field goal on 4th and goal from the two.

Sporadic rain at kickoff

Eric Branch: The 49ers are 9.5-point favorites, their biggest spread in the series’ 41-game history. That line partly reflects that the Seahawks no longer employ Russell Wilson. But it’s also factoring in that Seattle just beat Wilson. On Monday night. And have traveled to Santa Clara on a short week after an emotionally charged victory that cost them All-Pro safety Jamal Adams. If the 49ers open the season with two straight upset losses to Justin Fields and Geno Smith? Cue the hysteria and calls for Jimmy Garoppolo. Seahawks 20, 49ers 10.

Ann Killion: Pete Carroll and the Seahawks have been extremely comfortable at Levi’s ever since they ate Thanksgiving turkey on the 50-yard line the year the stadium opened.  Their lone loss came in overtime in 2018 when a Nick Mullens-led 49ers team relied on four Robbie Gould field goals for the victory.  But those wins all came with Russell Wilson behind center: I think Seattle takes its second loss ever at Levi’s but not by much: 49ers 17, Seahawks 10.

Scott Ostler: Forty-niners win 24-20. Turns out the 49ers’ don’t have a one-man roster, after all, there are several other players, many of them pretty good. Trey Lance will be fine, despite the brisk wind and some rain. The defense shines, Warner and Bosa are for real. Two long pass completions by Lance (30 yards-plus).

Michael Silver: This is a very important game for Trey Lance, and for the Niners — so, let’s operate under the premise that he and they will rise to the moment. The Seahawks already won their Super Bowl last Monday night, defeating Russell Wilson and the Broncos, and are playing on a short week with nothing to lose. They typically make it tough on the Niners, but I don’t expect them to have enough juice today. 49ers 20, Seahawks 17.

Odds of rain drop as kickoff approaches

The chances of record-breaking rain seem to be declining, as Eric Branch reports there’s a 30% chance of rain at kickoff, with a slight chance of rain continuing throughout the game with winds of about 15-18 mph. The game will also mark the NFL debuts of both of the 49ers’ 2022 third-round picks, RB Ty Davis-Price and WR Danny Gray.

Lance’s long week

Trey Lance made some big progress last week. In only a few days, he moved up the mythical rating scale from one of the worst current quarterbacks in the NFL to one of the worst quarterbacks of all-time. At least that’s what some analysts might have you believe.
