Man Utd news: Erik ten Hag plots ‘urgent’ £25m bid for marquee January signing | Football | Sport

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is reportedly eyeing a £25million bid for Benfica forward Goncalo Ramos. The Dutchman is keen to add firepower to his ranks as a matter of urgency with injuries to Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial exposing his lack of attacking options.

Rashford has enjoyed something of a renaissance under Ten Hag this season, bagging five goal contributions in his first six Premier League games. A muscle injury picked up against Arsenal earlier this month has kept him out of action, however, and he faces a fight to return for the Manchester derby on October 2.

Martial had a superb pre-season but suffered a devastating Achilles injury in August. United are supposedly being more cautious on the issue of his return due to long-term issues that can arise if it’s not given time to heal properly.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the final option through the middle but there may be a lingering sense of awkwardness given that he reportedly asked to leave during the summer. His first goal of the season came from the spot against FC Sheriff last week.

Postponements and the international break mean that United haven’t played in the Premier League since beating table-toppers Arsenal on September 4. They got their Europa League campaign up and running last week with a 2-0 win over FC Sheriff, having lost to Real Sociedad in their group stage opener.

“[The international break] is very useful,” said Ten Hag. “We have many meetings, we have to improve the structures in and around the club. We will also look to the window in January or next summer already to improve our way of playing by making plans. [Those not in international duty] will train properly and for the rest we have to prepare very well.”
